Dear Faculty of Arts,

Summer’s lease hath all too short a date; and sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines; but we can still make the most of it! Summer classes ended this week, and exams notwithstanding, some of Arts’s merry wanderers of the night are making their way to Bard on the Beach – back under the stars after two years – to partake of A Midsummer Night’s Dream

POMP, TRIUMPH, AND REVELLING

Awake the pert and nimble spirit of mirth: the Arts General Meeting, as per Christina Fung’s email on Tuesday, will be held on Aug. 31 in Arbutus 1780. Please see here for the agenda, and to RSVP. It’ll be our first in-person Faculty meeting in over two years, so you know that – unlike Bottom – we will “discourse wonders!”

A very good piece of work, I assure you, and a merry: The Summer 2022 edition of History’s student journal, The Emergent Historian, is out now (see attached). It’s an exceptionally rich testament to the breadth of interests, and the quality of work – including innovative multi-media projects – produced by our student historians. Congratulations to all involved!

Say what the play treats on; then read the names of the actors; and so grow to a point: Editor Greg Chan (ENGL) has shared the latest edition of Mise-en-scène, KPU’s journal of film and narration- the Pride edition! Read it here.

But hark! A voice: Associate Dean Wade Deisman gave yet another star turn this week on CBC’s BC Today with Michelle Eliot, discussing the troubling question of whether there is a surge in violent crime in BC. Check out Wade’s effortless jousting with Kash Heed and sundry callers here, as well as selected insights on the CBC News site.

Our queen and all our elves come here anon: The Arts team held a small celebration this week, with cake!!!, to welcome a very surprised Dean Shelley to her new role. Thanks, Amanda Camillo and Zahra Mohamud, for masterminding the festivities – and congratulations again, Shelley!

DEADLINES AND RESOURCES

In courtesy, in all reason, we must stay the time – Summer grading deadline: Please remember that all final grades and any “Incomplete Grade Contracts” must be submitted by or before August 24. If you’re concerned that delays in student submissions may hamper your ability to meet the deadline, please work on Incomplete Grade Contracts for those students and input an “I” grade by or before August 24. Be sure to contact arts@kpu.ca ASAP if you need any information or guidance about the process for submitting Incomplete Grade Contracts. Because meeting the Registrar’s grade submission deadline is critical, you may be hearing from members of the Dean’s office as we monitor the status of any outstanding course grades as we approach the August 24th deadline.

Drawn and ready for the childing autumn: Preparing your courses for Fall? Please remember, there is a veritable fairy land of resources available under the “Resources for Faculty” tab on Sharepoint. This includes materials for avoiding, and addressing, academic integrity violations, the Achieving Academic Success pamphlet for international students, course syllabus templates which come pre-loaded with all required links, Resources for faculty – Course Presentation Template (sharepoint.com), the Including All Citizens resource on inclusive pedagogy, forms of all kinds, and a bevy of other goodies. And above all, remember also to bookmark – and explore – the all-new Faculty Handbook.  Faculty and Instructional Staff Handbook – Simple Book Publishing (pressbooks.pub)

If we shadows have offended / Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber’d here / While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme / No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend: / if you pardon, we will mend.

Wishing you all a dreamy weekend,

Shelley, Dana, Billeh, Wade, and Greg
