Nothing says “August” like the Stanley Cup playoffs… apparently. As local bums/heroes the Vancouver Canucks and other glory-laden franchises lace ‘em up for another hopeless shot at Lord Stanley’s chalice, this week’s update pays homage to that most Canadian of traditions: ice hockey played to empty arenas in sweltering 30-degree midsummer heat.

For tonight’s pre-game warm-up, we are pleased to share this exclusive photo of HOCKEY LEGEND BOB FUHR meeting some lucky fans!

And now…LET’S DROP THE PUCK!!

First Team All-Star: We are thrilled to share the news that Dr. Asma Sayed (ENGL) has been named a Canada Research Chair (CRC) in South Asian literary and cultural studies. This Tier 2 Chair position, co-sponsored by KPU, brings a grant providing $600,000 to support Asma’s research over the next five years. As a Canada Research Chair, Asma will lead projects that include digitally archiving South Asian artistic productions from 1910 to 2010, a period of historic importance concerning the South Asian diaspora in Canada, and will translate works written by Canadian writers of South Asian origin in their heritage languages, such as Hindi and Gujarati, into English.  This is a tremendous achievement, as well as a fantastic opportunity for English, for Arts and Arts students, and for KPU as a whole. Congratulations, Asma!

Shuffling the Lines: A gentle reminder for those wishing to come to campus that, under Covid-19 conditions, it’s vital to submit a Campus Visit Request via this link: https://our.kpu.ca/sites/apps/campusvisit/SitePages/Home.aspx  This allows us to ensure that safety protocols are being respected.

The CertaintiesShe Shoots, She Scores!! The latest novel by Aislinn Hunter (CRWR), The Certainties, has just been published by Penguin Random House CanadaDescribed as “a vivid, moving novel reminiscent of Anthony Doerr and Michael Ondaatje, about the entwined fates of two very different refugees,” it sounds every bit as riveting as Aislinn’s The World Before Us. We look forward to reading it! Plaudits and kudos, Aislinn!

Exciting Young Players: HIST has just unveiled the latest edition of The Emergent Historian, its student academic journal, while PSYC recently rolled out Issue 2 of Kwantlen Psychology Student Journal: testaments to the calibre of our students’ work, as well as to the mentorship and teaching of faculty in these programs. A hearty “well done” to all involved!

And the Crowd Goes Wild!:  Nicola Harwood (CRWR) has launched a remarkable exhibition called SUMMONING in Prince George’s Two Rivers Gallery. Conceived as a “sound temple built of the female voice ” the exhibit allows audience members to activate voices that emerge, overlap, build, crescendo, and recede. It sounds truly compelling – be sure to check out the clip here.

Post-game analysis: We continue to be inspired by the grit and determination of Arts faculty, powering through the high-sticks, elbows, and hip-checks of Covid, and stickhandling onwards to pedagogical glory. The summer semester is nearly in the books – bringing us all one stride closer to the day when we can sing NA-NA-NA-NA, NA-NA-NA-NA, HEY-HEY-HEY, GOODBYE!!! to the coronavirus and be together in person again. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
