Neuropathy

jumping off of what I learned from tendon strength and hand position effort , I felt it could be insightful to learn about people who have conditions where their tendon strength has been injured.

Neuropathy is damage or dysfunction of one or more nerves that typically results in numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and pain in the affected area. Neuropathies frequently start in your hands and feet, but other parts of your body can be affected too.

-carpal tunnel is a type of hand neuropathy

-Hand Neuropathy can negatively effect hand manual dexterity (the ability to use your hands in a skillful, coordinated way to grasp and manipulate objects and demonstrate small, precise movements).

Indoor Rock climbing may provide some insight into what kinds of shapes and forms are easier to grip (requiring less hand dexterity and grip strength)

https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/climbing-holds.html

there are many types of rock climbing hold including horns, jugs, flakes, underclings, pockets, slopers, pinches, crimps, and ledges. However the easiest of these holds are Jugs.

JUG

Normally smaller holds are considered harder and thus because of their large size, Horns can also be considered to be easier than most holds, but because they are so big (bigger than the size of your hand), it can be difficult to maintain this grip for a long time.

HORN

This is why Jugs are the easiest hold; small enough to fit nicely for the size of an average hand, yet large enough to require little grip strength.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

“A repetitive strain injury (RSI), sometimes referred to as repetitive stress injury, is a gradual buildup of damage to muscles, tendons, and nerves from repetitive motions. RSIs are common and may be caused by many different types of activities, including:

  • using a computer mouse
  • typing
  • swiping items at a supermarket checkout
  • grasping tools
  • working on an assembly line
  • training for sports

Some common RSIs are:

Creative industry definition

The “creative industry” also called the “creative and digital industries” is defined as “a range of economic activities that are concerned with the generation and commercialization of creativity, ideas, knowledge and information.”

The creative industry is said to include sectors like “design, music, publishing, architecture, film and video, crafts, visual arts, fashion, TV and radio, advertising, literature, computer games and the performing arts.

TrackBall Mouse

Overall insights

-Kensinton track ball uses RED OPTICS for cursor accuracy.

-Bluetooth connectivity is a valuable option to have.

[side note: having built in bluetooth electronics rather than having a wireless receiver style connection will increase durability of product (wireless receivers tend to wear or break faster then the mouse itself). however it seems that bluetooth connectivity has feasibility issues like speed and usability.

-left handed people can only use trackball mice the have the ball in the center (Logitech MX Ergo is only for right handed users.

-some come with detachable wrist rests for added comfort

-having vertical scroll wheel action (both horizontal and vertical scrolling if possible) is a feature that users want in a mouse regardless of shape or form.

-tactile response seems to be key for enjoyability of use.

Anatomy of a Regular Computer Mouse

https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/852095191969478764/

On a regular Computer mouse, there is a Left click button, a Right click button, a scroll wheel, a motion detection sensor, and some sort of connection element.

The connective element is usually either a hard wire that connects directly to the computer or device, or a wireless transmitter and receiver that communicated to the computer or device without the need for a cable. The driver is usually installed upon first connection to a new device and is the thing that maps the buttons to executable command on the device; some mice allow you to change what each button does.

Functionality:
The left click button usually selects, drags

The Right click button normally allows for secondary options

The Scroll wheel usually allows for vertical navigation and sometimes allows for secondary function by pressing down

The motion sensor detects the movement of the mouse and translates it to the cursor.

Compositing

What is compositing?

“VFX Compositing seamlessly integrates digital assets with live-action footage to bring together the final shot of a film or game. Compositing is the final step of the VFX pipeline. A skilled Compositor layers together various elements in a way that makes them appear to naturally belong in the same space. To give you an example: a production company shoots a background (referred to as a plate) that contains a building up close and a cityscape behind. The Animator has animated a missile, and the Effects Artist has added smoke effects and an explosion with building destruction. Once this is all rendered out, the Compositor layers the missile, smoke, explosion and building destruction into the shot, using things like color correction and z-depth to bring it all together. Z-depth is basically a black and white representation of the depth of an object in a scene, and is very important in compositing 3D elements.”

WMSD’s

“Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are injuries or disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and spinal discs.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are conditions in which:

  1. The work environment and performance of work contribute significantly to the condition; and/or
  2. The condition is made worse or persists longer due to work conditions”-CDC 2020

Carpal Tunnel Syndrom

“Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway surrounded by bones and ligaments on the palm side of your hand. When the median nerve is compressed, the symptoms can include numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand and arm….Proper treatment usually relieves the tingling and numbness and restores wrist and hand function.” -MayoClinic

“Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most important disorders
for computer users. Nearly 260000 carpal tunnel syndrome surgeries happening in a year [,] 47% of that is associated with users job”. -Faraji, A., & Farahmand, M. R. (2013)

Hand major motions and its relation with CTS
Faraji & Farahmand express four motions that are predictable within an interaction between a user’s hand and a regular computer mouse:
• Pronation of forearm;
• Ulnar and radial deviation of wrist;
• Dorsi flexion of wrist;
• Extension, bending and lateral motions of fingers.

“If these motions exceed the excessive values, it leads to WMSDs in upper limbs. In fact these excessive situations will increase the carpal tunnel pressure”. -Faraji, A., & Farahmand, M. R. (2013).
