We mostly took the time to plant and bury seeds in the garden because it was our first visit. Even though it was a simple task, it helped me connect many of the ideas we have been learning about in green criminology to an actual situation.

Planting Seeds

I mostly thought about environmental concerns, such as pollution, climate change, and widespread environmental damage, before heading to the garden. But visiting the KPU Garden showed to me that environmental protection may also begin with little steps. We helped create an area that promotes sustainable practices and local food production by planting seeds. (Lynch & Long, 2022).

Helping the Environment

One idea from the readings that particularly interested me was environmental justice. This concept focuses on how environmental issues affect both individuals and communities. (Sneddon, 2025). The garden gives individuals an opportunity to learn about the origins of food and increases access to locally farmed goods. It was a reminder that creating sustainable food systems can help both people and the environment.

Growing Healthy Plants

Ecological justice, which focuses on protecting ecosystems and appreciating their value beyond meeting human needs, also came to mind as a result of the garden. (Sneddon, 2025). Even though we only planted seeds this week, they will eventually combine with soil, plants, insects, and other living things to create a larger ecosystem. When I observed the garden at the beginning of its growth, I became more aware of the amount of work needed to maintain good conditions.

Why Water Matters

Cyan criminology, which blends green and blue criminology, is another idea related to my experience. Damages to both land and water habitats are looked at by cyan criminology. I was reminded that water is one of the most important factors for maintaining ecosystems and producing food while I was watering the recently planted seeds. Gardens and many other types of life would not be able to exist without proper water systems. Cyan criminology challenges us to consider the links between environmental damages in water and on land. (Lynch & Long, 2022).

What I Learned

Although planting and gardening were the main objectives of our first visit, it changed my views on green criminology. Instead of simply learning about environmental impact from written material, I was able to participate in an activity that supports environmental sustainability. I’m eager to return later in the semester to see the seeds grow and discover more about the connections between ecosystems, people, and environmental justice.

My First Day at the Garden This week, we visited the KPU Garden for the first time as part of the course.
