This experience has taught me more about farming and planting vegetables than what I had originally thought. My family comes from a farming background, and although I personally do not have the same experience as them, I feel like I can now contribute when we plant seeds in our garden and harvest them when it is time to because of the knowledge and confidence I was able to obtain.

Watching the garden grow and finally reach the harvesting stage made me realize how much effort, care, and time goes into making sure a healthy crop. It also made me reflect on the amount of work that went into maintaining just a small garden. However, farmers who make a living through agriculture face even more difficult obstacles. For them this is their livelihood as it puts food on their table and pays their bills. I was surprised to learn how large zucchini can grow, so it is important that we must harvest it on time otherwise it impacts the overall quality. This showed me how critical it is to manage time when we grow food.

One of the things green criminology focuses on is the harmful impacts done to the environment. Therefore, growing vegetables with my group made me realize why individuals protest for a change. Threats of pollution such as the carbon dioxide that releases in the air from cars, trains, airplanes, and boats cause detrimental damage to the environment which affects production. We rely on this food because in return it fuels our body and gives us the nutrients we need to function on a daily basis. Moreover Katlia, the guest speaker, brought up issues which are occurring in her community such as the damage corporations are doing to local ecosystems in Indigenous communities, it made me realize how much danger their production of food and harvest is truly in.

I also learned many other things from Katlia’s visit. She mentions how the government and profit driven companies are starting new developments that impact the environment in Indigenous communities (Katlia, 2026). Additionally, Katlia (2026) elaborates on how governments and corporations ignore the rights of Indigenous people to express their opinions on pressing matters about their traditional lands.

Green criminology puts me in a reflective state of mind and allows me to think about the situations occurring in Canada pertaining to environmental harm which I have never thought about before. For example, one of the major issues we face as a nation is the Trans Mountain pipeline extension project. Many Canadians want this project complete which will lower prices. However, individuals such as members of the Indigenous community are against this because they want to protect their land. This project the government is trying to complete adds a new pipeline to the already existing one that was completed in 1953 (Between the Lines, 2024). Unfortunately, when people come together to protest the police tend to detain them. For example, Tim shared his story and was amongst one of the first protesters that was arrested simply for stopping the pipeline from passing through traditional territory ( Between the Lines, 2024). Looking back at my experience that I gained through gardening and guest speakers, it made me appreciate why people continue to fight for change. They aren’t doing it for themselves, they are doing it for our future.

Lafferty, Catherine (Katila) (2026) “ Chapter 10 Sovereignty is not for sale” In: Mother Earth is Our Elder: A Northern Indigenous Perspective on the Climate Crisis.
