Sewing Tips

  1. Take Breaks – If you make the same mistake twice in a row it means it is time for a break, a walk, or a snack, or a break of other sorts!
  2. Sewing is just like any other skill – The more you do it, the more you will learn and the better at it you will get.
  3. Mind the seam allowances – Sewing patterns are made with certain seam allowances, these should be noted on the pattern or instructions. Things tend to go slightly wonky if you go a bit rogue and decide to sew things at your own seam allowance width.
  4. Press throughout – Pressing while moving through the construction process will make a huge difference in the end result of your project. If you save all of the pressing to the end there will most likely be some places that you just won’t be able to press nicely.
  5. Sharp Sewing Machine Needles – When was the last time you changed your sewing machine needle? If you can’t remember, it probably needs changing. Be aware of the type of fabric you are working with and the type of needle that is in your machine. Certain types of fabric sew together better when using the appropriate (sharp) needle. As a general rule, if your machine is skipping stitches, switch to a fresh, and sharp, sewing needle.
  6. General sewing machine troubleshooting – If you have just threaded up your machine and it isn’t sewing right, unthread everything and then re-thread. The majority of the time this will fix the issue.
  7. Remember there are often different ways to achieve the same end result! Generally there are a variety of ways to do this, with no one way being the ‘right’ way, so explore to figure out what works best for you to achieve the result you are looking for.
