So how do we turn it from a contract into an invitation to learn? Our Teaching and Learning Strategists—Lisa, Daniel, Craig, and Sam—share their thoughts on what makes a syllabus more than paperwork. Their insights remind us that when we design with care and clarity, the syllabus becomes a compass for connection: a document that grounds our teaching values while fostering trust, transparency, and class="wp-block-paragraph">Sam emphasizes meeting the instructor as a person: “I often recommend that instructors include a section in their syllabus where students can genuinely ‘meet’ them through a short written reflection, a story, or even a brief video. This human connection provides the anchor that makes learning feel both grounded and personal.”

He explains that “a syllabus is often where students first begin their relationship with both the instructor and the course itself. In an age when content is abundant and easily accessible, the syllabus becomes more than just a list of topics. It’s an opportunity for instructors to set the tone as guides and experts in their field. It should move beyond outlining what will be ‘covered’ to offering students a sense of what will be expected of them and, more importantly, a reason to feel inspired and excited about learning.”

This invitation to connection can extend to students as well. Instructors might include space in the syllabus, or direct students to their Moodle and Zoom profiles, where they can share their preferred names, pronouns, and any other information that helps create a respectful, welcoming community.

Daniel suggests practical ways to personalize: “I would say collaborating on elements of the syllabus with the students—such as negotiating office hours, assignment deadlines, and even topics in the course. Provide opportunities where possible and don’t provide them where not feasible. I would also say provide more than just text—include multimedia such as infographics, a video introduction by the instructor, or images of campus maps. This helps to personalize the syllabus and humanizes it a bit more to make it more welcoming and inviting and friendly for students.”

Lisa focuses on language and accessibility: “The syllabus can be much more than a list of policies; it can be a welcoming invitation into a shared learning experience. When instructors use inclusive language and a conversational tone, they signal from the very first page that all students belong and that their contributions matter. A short welcome message or teaching philosophy statement can help humanize the document and set the tone for a supportive, collaborative environment.”

She emphasizes design choices that support all learners: “Thoughtful choices, such as avoiding jargon, clearly explaining abbreviations, and minimizing the use of symbols that may not be read correctly by screen readers, can make the syllabus more usable for all learners.”

Lisa offers a powerful contrast in accessibility statements. A compliance-driven statement “typically fulfills a requirement, something like, ‘If you require accommodations, please contact Accessibility Services.’ While functional, it often feels impersonal and detached from the learning experience.”

Her humanized alternative: “My goal is to design a learning experience that works for everyone. If any aspect of the course creates a barrier to your participation, please let me know. Together, we’ll find solutions and connect with Accessibility Services if needed.”

“This kind of message centers empathy and collaboration. It signals that accessibility is about partnership, not paperwork; and that the instructor is committed to creating a space where all students feel supported.”

When students encounter warmth and accessibility from the first page, they enter the course knowing they belong.

Clarity that Fuels Confidence

Clear learning outcomes and thoughtful assessment design help students understand not just what to do, but why it matters and how to succeed.

Craig emphasizes the metacognitive value of learning outcomes: “Instructors should inform the learners of the learning outcomes at the program level and at the course level. This metacognitive approach to describing the institution’s intentions around the learner’s ability helps them understand 1) what is expected of them, 2) why it is important and 3) how they may achieve it. In addition, research consistently shows that when new knowledge is linked to prior experiences and meaningful contexts, learning becomes more memorable and relevant.”

Sam recommends “direct and inviting language” such as “‘You will practice…’, ‘By the end of this week, you should be able to…’, or ‘Come prepared to discuss…’ [to] guide students on how to engage meaningfully.”

Daniel explains how assessment weighting communicates priorities: “I would say the weighting of each assessment type should help to signal to students what the expectation knowledge/skill/attitude (KSA) for the course is focusing on as that assessment would be aligned to the learning outcomes.” He advocates for “providing opportunities to the students for make-up work, emphasis on formal assessments, and choice/flexibility in assessments” to “help clearly communicate to the student the value of learning and process over the final grade and product.”

Clear outcomes and intentional assessment design don’t just measure learning—they guide it.

Firm, Fair, and Human

Policy language can either reinforce hierarchy or build partnership. Whether you anchor your course through learning outcomes, instructor presence, legal clarity, or philosophical commitment, students benefit when that foundation is visible and accessible.

The syllabus is a living document, reviewed and negotiated with students on the first day of class. It doesn’t need to be perfect—it needs to be thoughtful. Consider these questions as you review your own:

Can students see who you are and why this course matters?

Are learning outcomes clear and connected to assessments?

Do your policies communicate trust alongside structure?

Is your language welcoming and accessible to all learners?

Does integrity feel like a shared value or just a violation list?

Student success begins with intentional design. What will you revise in your next syllabus?

BONUS! Quick Insights from our Strategists

On creating accessible, humanized policies:
“Transparency builds confidence. When students can see themselves in the process, how their efforts lead to growth, they’re more likely to engage meaningfully.” —Lisa

On staying connected throughout the term:
“Use tools like timed, automated emails at the start of each week to outline learning goals, anticipate challenges, and guide students on how to navigate them.” —Sam

On focusing students on learning, not just grades:
“Students are often much more focused on the final grade and final product than the learning (necessarily) and the process. The grading section can be used to link assessments to the learning outcomes and provide an explanation as to how that demonstration of learning is integral learning.” —Daniel

On teaching integrity in your discipline:
“What does integrity look like in your discipline? What happens when people don’t comport themselves with integrity? Are there examples from your field where integrity lapsed—and what were the outcomes?” —Craig

Putting Principles into Practice: Simple Syllabus at KPU

The insights shared here remind us that thoughtful syllabus design takes time, care, and intention. While no tool can replace the human choices that make a syllabus meaningful, the right infrastructure can support those choices—freeing instructors to focus on the elements that matter most: connection, clarity, and student success.

At KPU, we’ve adopted Simple Syllabus to help make that work more sustainable.
