“Trailblazing” Graphic Design for Marketing Student Wins Industry Award

Congratulations to Graphic Design for Marketing student, Bella Sanchez, for being named one of five recipients of the 2022 RGD Trailblazer Awards! Presented by the Association of Registered Graphic Designers with support from industry partners, the award recognizes students across Canada from underrepresented and marginalized communities and provides a cash prize of $1,000 to each winner.
The RGD launched the Student Trailblazer Awards as part of their 2021 Student Awards program to recognize and support students from underrepresented and marginalized communities. “For students with systemic barriers, the already demanding journey of design school can become that much heavier,” says Wendy Gray RGD. “Together with our generous sponsors, we are thrilled to launch the Trailblazer Awards to acknowledge and celebrate students from marginalized and underrepresented communities. It’s our hope that these Awards will help to support the winners in covering the costs of their design education and recognize their design skills, hard work and resilience.”
“Bella is a multidisciplinary graphic designer with a background in digital and film photography. She finds developing a project from the research stages to reality greatly satisfying and fully recognizes the importance and necessity of the creative process. With a fine eye for detail integrated with insatiable curiosity and ambition, Bella is driven to create designs that will both galvanize and inspire people.” – RGD

Coastline Surf & Sport is a small sporting goods business based in Victoria, BC. They offer the best in surfboards, wetsuits, SUP (Stand-Up- Paddleboard) accessories, skateboards, clothes and shoes. All while following their goal to “live the west coast lifestyle” and help other experience it. Their target market can be categorized into two groups with the primary audience being The Mavericks and secondary The Dendrophiles. The Mavericks are between the ages of 20 to 40, 60% male and 40% female. They have an average income of 40-80k/year and are extroverted thrill seekers who relish in the adrenaline created by primarily surfing then snowboarding and/or skateboarding. The Dendrophiles are 18 to 28, 50% female and 50% male. They earn an average income of 20-70k/year and cautiously enjoy finding adventures along the west coast. The challenge was to create a comprehensive campaign that built off and visual represented the goal of the company to “live the west coast lifestyle” and help others experience it. My solution presents a loud and extroverted design system with orange hues, hand rendered type and dynamic textures helping present feelings of familiarity and passion across the campaign. I then paired black and white ambiguous photography to further elevate the idea that anyone can become a Coastal Creature.
Interior Design Student Wins Industry Award

Paulina embodies this amazing spirit! Congrats!!!

Interior Design Student Wins Industry Award at The Interior Design Show
Congratulations to 4th year Interior Design student Tayah Mawer and Michelle Ye (BCIT) for winning the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia (IDIBC) Emerging Professionals student design charrette.
“The term “charette” evolved from a pre-1900 exercise at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in France. Architectural students were given a design problem to solve within an allotted time. When that time was up, the students would rush their drawings from the studio to the Ecole in a cart called a charrette. Students often jumped in the cart to finish drawings on the way. The term evolved to refer to the intense design exercise itself. Today it refers to a creative process akin to visual brainstorming that is used by design professionals to develop solutions to a design problem within a limited timeframe.”
Students across various interior design programs and post-secondary institutions took part in an afternoon charrette during the Interior Design Show in Vancouver. As winners, Tayah and Michelle attended IDIBC’s Shine Awards where they were recognized for the win. Great teamwork for the win!

Product Design Faculty Presents Research at Global Design Conference
The Systemic Design Association’s RSD11 (Relating Systems Thinking and Design) is a four-day symposium, that was held October 13-16, both in-person and online, hosted by the University of Brighton. The SDA provides an international community home for the wide range of designers and scholars leading emerging practices, design-led systems research, and advanced design methods evolving from systems thinking and design. Systemic design has moved toward pragmatic practice. By sharing methods and cases through the annual RSD symposia, practitioners are building a common understanding. SDA creates opportunities for dialogue that contribute to guiding principles for systemic design practice.
Victor Martinez, researcher and faculty in the Product Design program was invited to present his research to an international audience, as part of the digital stream of the symposium.
“This exhibit presents a selection of the final “synthesis maps” developed in Victor’s industrial design studio classroom. Within a portfolio of more than 50 projects, the topics range from food waste, political campaigns advertisement, human body waste, dangers of self-medication, rapid cycling fast fashion stress, among many others. The topic of problems to tackle has been generally selected by students themselves.”

Congratulations to Jade on receiving her Indigenous Business Leadership Executive MBA from SFU’s Beedie School of Business
Jade, a 202 graduate from our Interior Design program is the Owner of GreenJade Interiors, with heritage from Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Han First Nation.
“Jade is on a mission to change how people inhabit and engage in physical space through the power of Interior Design. Every day she strives to inspire others to see that everything we have a part in is connected through the language of art and the science behind it. Jade started out in the single-family residential construction industry while living in Tk’emlúps (Kamloops BC), and realized that designing is much more exciting than installing. So, she headed west and enrolled in the only CIDA accredited university in western Canada (at the time) for her Bachelor of Interior Design at the Wilson School of Design at KPU. While working for a respected architecture firm in Delta BC she was inspired to learn about the many facets of business and was accepted into SFU’s Beedie School of Business to study an EMBA in Indigenous Business and Leadership and graduated October 2022.
Jade has received numerous awards such as the Ruth Williams Bursary for Indigenous Entrepreneurs (2021), and the Interior Designers of Canada PROpel award for emerging leaders in the design community (2021).”
