1. INTRODUCTION

Honestly speaking, the water balls are my favorite snack of all. These are so crispy, and I cannot even imagine my life without eating them. When I was in India, I always went outside specially to eat water balls.

In India, the water balls had different names in different languages as it is known as pani puri in Hindi, Golgappa in Punjabi, phuchka in Bhojpuri, etc.

HISTORY

Basically, these originated in the ancient kingdom of Magadha, Bihar in India and originally it is known as jalapatra. To be honest, there is no written documentation on the history of water balls.

It is a famous street food liked by everyone in my country. It is a thin and crispy circular crust, hollowed out for a large pinch of mashed potato and topped with spices, and tangy water which tastes like no other snack.

Nowadays, it is very famous all over the world and the best is that it is served according to the taste of people as it is presented with sweet and sour water. It is served on every occasion at marriages and parties. As well as it has the easiest recipe and can be made at home.

Cultural Significance

Golgappy is a very culturally significant food. In an eastern society or mainly in India, it serves multiple important roles as a snack. These roles include things such as the following:

Symbol of Street Food Culture:

Golgappay is an essential part of the street food culture of South Asia, and it’s an affordable and delicious snack for the locals. The vendors selling Golgappay are often seen on busy streets, bazaars, and other public places, attracting a large crowd of foodies.

Festive Food:

Golgappay is often served during festivals and special occasions. In India, it’s a popular snack during the festive season of Holi, where people celebrate the victory of good over evil by throwing colors and enjoying delicious food, including Golgappay.

Social Bonding:

Golgappay is a popular snack among friends and families, and it’s often shared as a social bonding activity. People enjoy the snack while chatting, laughing, and sharing stories, making it a memorable experience.

Health Benefits:

Golgappay may not be the healthiest snack, but it has some nutritional benefits. The filling of Golgappay contains chickpeas, potatoes, and other vegetables, which are rich in fiber, protein, and vitamins. The spiced water also contains herbs and spices that have medicinal properties and aid digestion.
