Welcome to the Graphic Design for Marketing Program

Want to feed your creativity and fuel your passion for graphic design? Join our intimate community of talented students and immerse yourself in our innovative, studio-based program with a commitment to creating a balanced, integrated and agile graphic design curriculum. Here’s a snapshot of what we’re all about:

Our Students

Students in the Graphic Design for Marketing program learn from faculty whose depth of knowledge and passion make falling in love with design easy. Small classes and small number of faculty facilitate a genuine friendship and community during the four years. Instructor and program coordinator Carley Hodgkinson calls students her “design children” and the students can confirm: GDMA feels like family.

“The Bachelor part of the Bachelor of Design degree sometimes gets overlooked because we talk about design so much – but GDMA students come out as very well-rounded thinkers, writers and storytellers with smart opinions and fresh takes on the ethical gray areas in our industry.”

Carley Hodgkinson, Program Coordinator

The program is always adapting to social and technological shifts in the world, whether it’s by incorporating User Experience and User Interface design or by challenging students to use design for social good and encouraging empathy in design. From a student perspective, second year Christina Tran says, “GDMA has helped me grow and realize my potential as a designer. My favourite aspect of the program is having the opportunity to see how the same design problems can be solved differently by my cohort who is just as enthusiastic for design as I am.”

Student Awards

We have some pretty talented people here in GDMA.

Graduate Linda Luu won the Graphic Designers of Canada BC Salazar Award in the branding category last year with her playful but sophisticated branding project: Ugly Dumpling, a small Vancouver based restaurant and bar specializing in Pan-Asian comfort food with a farm-to-table approach. The playful, rustic, but modern drawing brings out a sense of craft and sophistication of the brand.

We’re proud to say that Linda is one of several students in the Graphic Design for Marketing program who won design awards in 2020.

Mentorship

The Graphic Design for Marketing program offers the unique and valuable experience of mentorship during the final semester. Experience the industry you’re about to enter by working under a design expert in a design firm or in-house position. The mentorship gives students invaluable guidance and experience that builds important industry connections and prepares them to launch exciting careers. Mentorship pushes students out of their comfort zone and into the real-world design challenges that help them grow and develop their design skills and critical thinking.
