3D Printing

It can change the whole paradigm of how our children will see innovation and manufacturing…

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a type of manufacturing that uses a variety of methods and materials to create three-dimensional objects created from a digital CAD file. There are a variety of different 3D printing methods and capabilities, such as concrete (for housing structures), metal, and more. The three most common types are, Fused Deposition Modeling or Fused Filament Fabrication (FDM or FFF), Stereolithography (SLA), and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). FDM, which is what this project will be focusing on, places layers on layers of molten plastic (the most common material is PLA), creating an object and often requiring support material that ends up as scraps. SLA follows the same layer by layer approach as FDM but involves a laser that hardens resin and requires a notable amount of support material and post-processing every print. In SLS, a laser hardens power to create the object, requiring no suport material as , but a lot of post-processing.

With 3D printing, complexity is free. The printer doesn’t care if it makes the most rudimentary shape or the most complex shape, and that is completely turning design and manufacturing on its head as we know it.
