The start to this school year was unlike any other. Being completely online is quite a different dynamic and while it has its benefits, it also brings challenges. Being at home all day, having separation from school life and home life and managing that time has so far been the biggest challenge for me. Scheduling and planning is something that brings a lot of peace to me actually, so making a schedule and following it will be key moving forward.
Thus far, I have barely scratched the surface of everything I need to know, however, I do feel that I am on the right track with finding relevant articles and research. Especially after making a list of keywords in class…
contagion • virus • bacteria • space • isolation • protection • healthy bacteria • immune system • mental health • deterioration • body systems • biological process • health • systems • small spaces • nutrition • spacecrafts • submarines • closed loop • prevention • human contact • spread of disease • human health • iss • naval • prisons/institutions • vaccum • quarantine • “in vacuum” • microgravity • ventilation • air circulation • filtration
The ones that I have currently looked into are; contagion, closed environment, ventilation, air circulation, spacecraft, quarantine, space, virus, ISS. I will continue to use these and the rest of the keywords as keep looking for articles.
Some notable things that I’ve come across in research so far are ventilation in buildings and hospitals to avoid contamination of healthy patients, and NASA’s Health Stabilization Program to prevent the spread and transmission of viruses and diseases. This reminded me I have a contact in the HVAC industry who might bring an interesting perspective should I interview him.
Content that was suggested I check out included the Bill Nye: Science Rules podcast, and the films Contagion and Mars. This reminded me of one of my favourite shows, Lost in Space. In the second season the air of the planet they are on is toxic and deadly, so the family has to ensure their habitat is completely closed off. Watching Contagion and Lost in Space another time may be beneficial especially because I now will be coming at it from a different lens.
